North America

Physical conditions:-
North America is the third largest continent in the world. It belongs to new world as it was discovered by Columbus in the year 1492. It is shaped like a giant triangle, narrowing at base to form thin strip of land that joins this continent to South America. In the north it extends above the Arctic Circle and is a frozen treeless land. Between the forests of the humid east and the foot hills of rocky mountains is the grassland region - the Prairies. Regular movement of the Earth's crust causes has shaped the great mountain ranges that runs down the western side of the continent.

Total Land Area :- 24,709,000 sq.km.

Highest Point :- Mt. Mc Kinley(6194 meters).

Lowest Point :- The Death Valley in California region is lowest point(86 meters below the sea level) in the continent and is second highest hottest places on the Earth.

The Great Lakes :- It is chain of freshwater lakes located in eastern North America. Consisting of Lake Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, they form the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth . This region contains numerous minor lakes, rivers and approximately 35,000 islands.

Panama Canal
Panama Canal joins the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans across the Isthmus of Panama. It is slightly more than 64 km long, excluding the dredged approach channels and either end. Each year 12,000 or more ships pass through the lock canal, cutting about 12,600 km off the voyage between the two oceans, which otherwise requires the southern trip of South America, Cape Horn.
